Crime.... it's not just for smart people

I can corroborate every detail that Megan McArdle recounts in this blog post, although, in my memory, the potential criminal shuffled away only because he saw me give him the Clint-Eastwood-in-The-Good-The-Bad-And-The-Ugly-Death-Stare.

No, no, that's not true -- he was just a very inept criminal.

In August 1989 I was living at 101st & West End in Manhattan, sharing a large apartment with one other person. He chose to endure New York's summers without AC, but mine was blazing away one hot night. We were on the top floor of a 7 story building with the fir escape oing up to the kitchen window.

I woke up that night to hear my roommate yelling at the top of his lungs and I heard glass breaking at about 2 a.m. I opened my bedroom door and there was a sixteen year old kid standing in the hallway. I grabbed him, the police came, took him to jail and he pleaded guilty to criminal trespass and malicious mischief.

The most amazing part of this story: I went back to sleep after the cops left.
